The Aravalli Range, one of the world’s oldest mountain ranges, stretches for approximately 700 km. It serves as a natural shield protecting Delhi-NCR from the dust and desertification of the Thar Desert. Recently, the government’s new definition of a 100-meter height created significant controversy. Following this, protests were seen in several areas regarding the Aravalli Range. However, the central government has consistently maintained that the Aravalli Range is not under any threat.
There is uproar in the country regarding the Supreme Court’s decision regarding the new definition of Aravalli mountain range. Environmentalists and common people of the country are calling it the beginning of the destruction of Aravalli mountain range. There are protests in many places in the country regarding this. However, the Modi government has clearly said that 98% of Aravalli is safe. It has also targeted the previous Gehlot government of Rajasthan.
Meanwhile, the Congress party alleges that the definition of the Aravalli region has been changed to allow large-scale mining. However, the government has completely rejected this claim. Following the outcry, the central government has issued instructions to state governments to impose a complete ban on granting any new mining leases in the Aravalli region.
The central government has directed ICFRE to identify additional areas. Mining will also be completely banned in the Aravalli areas. The central government has promised to protect the integrity of the Aravalli. Old mines will also be required to comply with court orders. The government’s goal is to completely stop unregulated mining. Saving the Aravalli is crucial to preventing desertification.
