On Friday, the Supreme Court of India touched upon the emotional request of the father of the Air India pilot who tragically perished in the plane crash in June 12 in Ahmedabad, Commander Sumeet Sabharwal. At the hearing, the bench (Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi) had assured the bereaved father that the nation had a high opinion of his son. The court commented that not a single one of the 1.2 billion Indians acknowledged that there was any faultiness of the pilot, and that the initial investigation report does not indicate that the pilot was negligent or wrong doing.
The father of the deceased pilot had gone to the apex court seeking an unbiased and transparent inquiry on the reason behind the crash and there was concern that the official investigation has been done by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). His petition is aimed at getting the truth behind the incident and that no one should be unfairly blamed against the pilot.
Considering the sensitivity of the issue, the Supreme Court has agreed to hear the petition as well as a similar petition submitted by an NGO, Safety Matters, which also demands an independent investigation into the crash. The court has already sent notifications to the Centre and the DGCA, asking them to submit their replies to the court before the next hearing, which will take place in November 10.
Air India flight, which had Commander Sumeet Sabharwal, had a tragic accident when trying to land at Ahmedabad Airport on June 12 causing several casualties. The comments made by the Supreme Court have brought relief to the pilot’s family and reinstated the pilot’s integrity and professionalism. The move to have the court hear an independent inquiry is being viewed as a move towards the transparency, accountability and justice to the victims that lost their lives in the brutal crash.
