The Supreme Court issued a notice on Friday to the governments of Maharashtra and Assam on a case filed by YouTuber Ashish Chanchlani, asking it to quash or transfer FIRs against him registered in Mumbai. A plea filed Thursday challenges an FIR registered against it in Guwahati on the charge of obscenity in the YouTube show ‘India’s Got Latent’.
But the main accused in the case is podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia, who made spectacles on the show and has been named in it. Reports said that the FIR for Chanchlani was registered under the cyber police station, Guwahati Crime Branch Assam. His prayer to the Supreme Court is that, first the Assam FIR (No. 05 of 2025) be quashed by the Court on the ground that it has already been registered first in Mumbai at the Nodal Cyber Police Station, Mumbai. He has, meanwhile, asked for the Assam FIR to be transferred to Mumbai as numerous investigations into the same matter would not be fair.
Chanchlani’s anticipatory bail was first granted by the Gauhati High Court earlier in the hearing of the same. He has been told to turn up before the investigating officer within 10 days. Chanchlani’s team of lawyers disputed that their client had said anything inflammatory on the show and said that most of the FIR’s allegations were about the other co-accused individuals.
It was registered as an FIR in Assam on February 10 pursuant to a complaint by an individual and under more than one legal provision, including Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), the Information Technology Act, the Cinematograph Act and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act. A development in a legal battle that has been ongoing related to the case, the Supreme Court’s notice is a very prominent one.
