In a recent judgment, a two-bench of the Supreme Court comprising of Justice Bela Trivedi and Justice Satish Chandra Sharma dismissed the bail application of an accused involved in the NDPS case. While giving his remarks, then Justice Sharma also used Narcos and Breaking Bad to give a clear understanding of the powers and the dangers posed by drug syndicates. His comparison was intended to prove that it exercising a lot of strain to deal with such criminal structures, which function effectively and are very hard to pin down.

“They paid you money, and you expect them to justify their actions; you can’t fight with these people. Murdering the country’s youth is what they are doing, Justice Sharma added, pointing at the consequences of the phenomenon of drug trafficking.” He further said, “Let me ask you if you have watched Narcos!!! A very strong syndicate. Rarely caught. Another that is a must-watch to some extent is Breaking Bad. One cannot argue with these men who more or less contribute to the extermination of young generations in this country.”

Justice Sharma’s statement was an attempt to impress the size of the drug problem, comparing drug crime syndicates to such TV heroes, the drug cartels in these shows. The series Narcos displayed on Netflix describes the story of the Medellin cartel, mainly Pablo Escobar. It describes life in the cartel that was headed by Pablo Escobar and shows the attempts of the police to bring the criminal down. In contrast, the television drama series – Breaking Bad examines the metamorphosis of Walter White, a high school chemistry teacher who turns into a methamphetamine cook due to a terminal cancer prognosis. The transformation to a drug dealer and the consequential moral ambiguity is a perfect reflection of the persona of an unlawful drug operation.

The decision to have the accused remanded and not given bail by the Supreme Court is fallowing the court’s relentless fight against drug trafficking and its toll on the youths of the nation.
