Oleum (fuming sulphuric acid) gas leaked from a chemical unit located in an industrial area of Palghar district in Maharashtra on Monday afternoon, following which 2600 people, including 1600 school students, were evacuated to safer places. Officials said that three people complained of minor eye irritation. The leakage of sulphur trioxide (SO3) gas at Bhageria Chemical Company, located at Plot D-17 in Tarapur MIDC area, Boisar in Palghar district of Maharashtra, created panic in the entire industrial area. The effect of the gas was so widespread that people living up to three to four kilometres away started complaining of eye irritation, cough and difficulty in breathing.

Previously, in August 2025, a major accident occurred in the Tarapur Industrial Area (MIDC). A gas leak at a pharmaceutical company’s manufacturing plant resulted in the tragic death of four workers, while two others were seriously injured. Similarly, a toxic gas leak at Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) in Surathkal, Mangaluru district, Karnataka, resulted in the death of two employees. This incident occurred in MRPL’s Oil Movement Section (OMS).
