In a sacrilege case, the highest temporal body of Sikhs sent former Punjab Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal to serve his religious punishment. This morning, the Akali Dal chief, who was seated in a wheelchair outside the Golden Temple in Amritsar, showed visuals while carrying a spear and a plaque around his neck.

Mr. Badal’s brother-in-law, senior Akali Dal politician Bikram Singh Majithia, started his punishment by cleaning utensils at the Golden Temple.

The Akal Takht has sentenced Mr. Badal to serve as a “sewadar” and given clean duty in the kitchen and toilet at several gurdwaras for giving favor to Gurmeet Ram Rahim, the head of Dera Sacha Sauda, during the 2015 Guru Granth Sahib sacrilege.

Mr. Badal and the Akali Dal leaders and core committee members who served in the 2015 cabinet have been instructed to clean the Golden Temple’s toilets for an hour from noon. They will take a bath after the cleaning duty and serve langar.

The Fakhr-e-Qaum (pride of the Sikh community) honor, which was given to his father and the late Parkash Singh Badal, the former chief minister of Punjab, in 2011 for his services to the community, has now been taken away.
