On Sunday, the statue installed in memory of the rape-murder victim of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital at Kolkata was vandalized and found broken.
The statue was installed in what the junior doctors at the hospital have called the ‘Droho Gallery,’ an extension of the ongoing protest for the victim. The gallery held two statues: one with an individual dressed as a doctor and the other one with a lady dressed in a saree with an apparent sign of easing /remembrance.
On Sunday morning, junior doctors found that the statue, which had been installed earlier in the middle of the gallery, was lying on the ground, and the face of the statue was almost cut. It is still unknown what exactly happened to lead to the destruction of the statue, as doctors were undecided whether this event could be considered vandalism. However, the police were not called and no official report was made, though the remaining statue was also taken down from the gallery as a precaution.
This actually happened when the case was about to reach a key stage in its hearing. Sanjay Roy, the main accused in the case, is to start trial today, the 11th of November. He is accused under Section 64 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), Section 66 of the BNS, and Section 103 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Section 64 is about punishment for causing the death of another or putting that person in a persistent vegetative state, and Section 66 is also linked with causing death. There is Section 103 that deals with murder charges. Roy’s trial is undoubtedly one of the critical turning points in the fight for the deceased woman whose memory the gallery was to pay tribute to.
This act has even fueled the spirit of junior doctors who are still on strike; they want that justice must prevail in the case. It only goes to show the intensity of emotions tied to the case and the general demand for justice and protection in the medical profession.
