New Delhi: In view of the Bharat Bandh call by farmers’ unions to demand scrapping of three Central farm laws, Massive traffic snarls were witnessed on the Gurugram-Delhi border. A section of the trade unions and civil society groups held a protest at Jantar Mantar. A farmer has died during protests at the Singhu border in Haryana. According to the police, the death was attributed to a heart attack and had no connection with protests.
Delhi Congress chief Anil Chaudhary stated during the agitation, “I can understand their situation. This is a farmers’ issue, Congress will protest on the streets. If farmers ask us to leave from here, we will go back. We have come here for farmers, there is no political agenda.” In response to which Pravin Mallik, BKU appreciating his concern re-iterated that the union had demanded political support from the political parties and not physical participation.
A rally was organized in Bengaluru to express solidarity with farmers from the town hall but the police objected to the march. “We deployed 45 officers and 600 staff to ensure a peaceful rally. So far, 30 people have been detained near Maurya Junction” MN Anucheth, Central DCP said. Protestors of several trade unions formed human chain in Kochi to support the call for Bharat Bandh today. Whereas, in Tamil Nadu, 2 protestors have been held during the clash between cops and protestors.
