Katchatheevu: Thursday morning saw a deadly accident of a Sri Lankan Naval boat with an Indian fishing trawler near Katchatheevu island, which led to the death of a fisherman, and another fisherman was missing. The MEA described the event as occurring around four to five nautical miles north of the coast of Katchatheevu island.

The incident was with a fishing boat belong to India in which four Indian fishermen were on board. The lost fisherman was eventually found but another fisherman is still missing as the unidentified body was pulled out of the water. Emerging two man as survivors the latter was taken to Kankesanthurai Hospital. This is the true story and to this date the efforts to find the said fisherman is still on.

Since the act, the MEA has responded swiftly and without any delay. It has been further said that the Indian Consulate officials in Jaffna have been directed to proceed to Kankesanthurai to extend their assistance to the fisher folks and their loved ones. Some of the activities within this effort include the offer of help and the liaison with the relevant authorities concerning the situation.

Regarding the incident the acting high commissioner of Sri Lanka in New Delhi was recalled to the Ministry of External Affairs. A vigorous condemnation was made and many people were brought out to show concern regarding the incident by showering them with flowers and going down on their knees with bowed heads. The MEA added that the GoI has taken sensitive and humanitarian considerate positions concerning such issues related to fishermen. Also, India’s High Commissioner in Colombo is reported to inform the Sri Lankan government later in the tod for the same.

The MEA again emphasized that the Indian government always speaks and calls for humane and humanitarian approach towards any issue concerning fishermen. The case raises several issues about preservation and the condition of the fishermen performing in the disputed and the important sea zones.
