On Monday morning, a SpiceJet aeroplane that was heading towards Delhi had to land back in Pune under total emergency conditions after losing control of the plane due to a technical problem soon after takeoff. The aircraft involved was a Boeing 737-8AS VT-SLG, which had taken off from Pune airport approximately at 6:40 am, almost 40 minutes later than scheduled and was heading to Delhi as flight SG937 at the time of the incident.
The flight reportedly made a mid-air turnabout and landed safely back in Pune after an hour in the air. A news agency quoted sources saying that the aircraft had landed under maximum emergency measures. Deplaning was carried out normally, and no injuries were reported.
SpiceJet, in a statement, explained that the problem was identified when the flap transit light flickered on after takeoff. SpiceJet flight SG 937 on September 1, which was flying between Pune and Delhi, landed back in Pune soon after takeoff. After takeoff, the flap transit light flashed on, and the operating crew performed all the required checks by following standard operating procedures. The pilots chose to go back to Pune as a precautionary measure, the airline said.
Flightradar24 flight tracking site confirmed that the Boeing 737 was flying the route and was scheduled to land in Delhi at 8:10 am. Sudden rerouting not only interrupted the travelling plans of the passengers, but the airline insisted that everything was done to ensure safety.
This accident occurred at a time when Indian carriers are being subjected to a greater level of scrutiny in terms of operational safety and maintenance standards. Emergency landings are not a frequent occurrence, and airlines emphasise that these precautionary steps are implemented to secure the safety of the passengers before any other consideration.
Officials will inspect the plane and identify the source of the technical fault and then allow it to operate again.
