Goa Police have arrested 21-year-old Darius Dias for rash and negligent driving after his Mini Cooper S crashed at a high rate of speed killing 1 person and seriously injuring another in Dona Paula.
Darius, whose father is a local businessman, was allegedly speeding when he struck a motorcycle driven by 23-year-old Diksha Parwadkar and accompanied by her work colleague Yuvaan Arunkumar as they exited the Taj Convention Centre and began heading home from their shifts.
According to police, the collision between his vehicle (Mini Cooper) and the motorcycle was so violent that it rendered Diksha Parwadkar critically wounded. She was transported to a hospital nearby where she was later pronounced dead on arrival. Yuvaan was seriously injured and is currently being treated.
Police have reported that a case has been filed against Darius and he will remain in custody, pending preliminary investigation into the event’s circumstances; preliminary reports indicate speed was a primary contributing cause to this collision, and additional investigation will be conducted to establish an entire timeline of event relating to this incident.
There are fears about road safety and reckless drivers resulting from the accident, especially in upscale and congested areas such as Dona Paula. Police say they will enforce the law severely on these types of drivers and continue to reiterate the need for responsible driving in order to prevent these types of tragic accidents from happening.
