Sources indicate that Karnataka Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah and the Deputy Chief Minister, DK Shivakumar will meet at the New Delhi meeting with the Congress leader, Sonia Gandhi, on December 14. The session is in the wake of ongoing speculation and internal division in the state Congress on leadership and the chief ministerial seat.
The chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party, Sonia Gandhi is supposed to have talks with the two leaders after the Congress held a significant rally at Ramlila Maidan in the national capital. The rally is one of the congress campaigns, called Vote Chor Gaddi Chhod (unsit the vote thieves), where the party is aiming at the ruling BJP due to its claims of colluding with the Election Commission.
In Karnataka, it is the Siddaramaiah-Shivakumar meeting with senior leadership of the party that is being keenly observed, as the relationship between the two political leaders had been a regular topic of political discourse. Though Siddaramaiah is the current chief minister, DK Shivakumar who is also the president of the state Congress is also viewed as a powerful contender and a power centre in the party.
Some three weeks back, the Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge had admitted that there was indeed a confusion in the Karnataka unit, and that the matter would be sorted out by the top party leadership, of Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and himself. His comments had been a source of expectation that a high level intervention was about to take place.
The next meeting is thus being perceived as a potential move towards a reduction in tensions and a good unity among the party before major political hurdles. The Congress party has to maintain internal stability in Karnataka because the state is still regarded as one of the most effective bases of the party in the southern part of India.
The leaders of the party have however insisted that the Karnataka government is stable and is working well and any dialogues with any of the central leadership is routine coordination.
