Wife of jailed Ladakhi activist Sonam Wangchuk, Gitanjali Angmo, has claimed that a fake story is being pushed to distract demands to implement the Sixth Schedule and to have a scapegoat. In reaction to some of the new allegations against her husband, Angmo was critical of the police and firmly opposed the comments of Ladakh Director General of Police (DGP) S.D. Singh Jamwal.
Angmo told a news agency on Tuesday, “We absolutely disapprove the comments made by the Ladakh DGP. It is not only me, even people in Ladakh denounce these charges.” Her remarks followed a briefing given to the press by the DGP on Saturday, where he insinuated that Sonam Wangchuk had links to Pakistan and asked why he was travelling to other countries.
Angmo characterized what happened on September 24 to be very disturbing and the behavior of security officers’ serious concerns. She insisted on the accountability of the use of force, and questioned, “Who gave CRPF the permission to open fire? Who shoots at his own citizens, especially in a district where no such history of violent disturbances has existed?”
Giving weight to accusations that her husband instigated the unrest the Angmo once more stated that Wangchuk had always been a proponent of peaceful means of protest. “What possibly could Sonam Wangchuk have provoked? she asked. Not here, he was elsewhere, watching a hunger strike.”
She proceeded to blame authorities of trying to oppress local demands in the name of security issues. Angmo believes that DGP is working with an agenda. They are bent on obstructing the working of the Sixth Schedule, and seek to bring some one to be a scapegoat.
Angmo also accused people of trying to connect her husband with unrest being part of a wider plan to police the autonomy movement in Ladakh.
