In a sensational development in the murder case of Raja Raghuvanshi, Meghalaya Police has revealed that his wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, is suspected to have paid 20 lakh rupees to contract killers to kill her husband during their honeymoon. The killing happened a few days after their marriage, serving as a very dark twist to what was intended to be a happy vacation.
Investigators claim that Sonam initially gave the assailants 15,000 rupees in cash, which was reportedly stuffed out of her husband’s wallet at the time of the crime. The entire sum of 20 lakh was said to have been paid later as the agreement to conduct the murder. On 2 June, the body of Raja was found in a gorge adjacent to a waterfall in Sohra (Cherrapunji) in the East Khasi Hills district, some 10 days after the couple had gone missing.
The two got married on May 11 and proceeded to Meghalaya on May 21 on their honeymoon. The pair was reported missing on May 23- the day police now think Raja was hacked to death using a machete. After a spirited probe, Sonam was nabbed on Tuesday at Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh, where she had surrendered. She was subsequently taken to Shillong through Patna, Kolkata, and Guwahati.
Her alleged boyfriend, Raj Kushwaha, and three contract killers (one each) of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh were also arrested by police. Raj allegedly informed the police that he had called off the plan at the eleventh hour and even urged the murderers not to go ahead with it, but they still went ahead to Meghalaya. Sonam only pushed them to carry out the murder at the crime scene, promising an extra ₹15 lakh, allegedly.
The fact that Sonam did not utter a single word throughout her transfer and the fact that she had been involved in the financial transactions indicate a great deal of planned conspiracy, say authorities. They are investigated in depth.
