Delhi, May 19, 2025 – India has witnessed a marginal increase in COVID-19 cases in recent days, according to the Union Health Ministry’s updated database since May 12th. This development comes against the backdrop of a significant surge in infections across parts of Southeast Asia, including China, Thailand, Hong Kong, and Singapore.
While the rise in India appears modest at present, health officials are closely monitoring the situation, especially in states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra which have reported slightly higher numbers. This comes as several Southeast Asian nations are grappling with a fresh wave of infections. Singapore, for instance, has reported a substantial 28% increase in cases, with the ‘LF.7’ and ‘NB.1.8’ subvariants of the JN.1 lineage being dominant. Hong Kong is also experiencing a resurgence, primarily affecting the elderly. China’s case numbers are nearing their previous summer peak, and Thailand has seen a spike following the Songkran festival in April.

Despite the increasing numbers in Southeast Asia, health authorities emphasize that the majority of new infections are mild, and there is no need for widespread panic. The uptick is largely attributed to waning immunity from previous vaccinations and infections. Experts suggest that as time passes since the last vaccine dose for many individuals, their antibody levels decrease, making them more susceptible to infection.
In India, while the current increase is small, health officials are urging vigilance and encouraging people, especially those in vulnerable groups, to ensure their vaccinations are up to date. They also advise following basic hygiene practices and taking precautions in crowded places. The situation in Southeast Asia serves as a reminder that the virus continues to circulate, and while it has become endemic, monitoring and responsible behavior remain crucial.
