The former Union Minister and Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal has urged the Election Commission of India to act against Prime Minister Narendra Modi fast for his recent remarks on the Congress Party, which wrongly put the Congress party in the stand to redistribute wealth among the Muslims. Sibal stressed that the Election Commission should pass its resolution condemning Modi and enquire about him through official notice.
Sibal expressed concern over the divisive nature of politics, saying, “The level of discourse in politics has reached an unprecedented low, and it’s imperative that we prevent it from deteriorating further.” He questioned why the Election Commission did not take immediate action and stressed the importance of condemning such rhetoric.
Opposition leaders took notice of Modi’s comments and quickly criticized him over the remarks, saying they insulted the people of India. According to Modi, the ruling party was trying to distribute people’s assets to “infiltrators” and families with more children. He claimed, “The Congress manifesto says that, they will look at the gold ownership of daughters and sisters of the families and distribute those to their children whose number exceeds the legal limit, which is notorious for promoting infiltrators.”
He also reminded, “The previous Congress government enjoyed propounding that over population of Muslims is a matter of concern. So, the favorable resources must be segregated such that the resources meant for the large families belonging to the foreigners.”
Modi’s remarks got the opposition abuzz with many anti-inflammatory analyses of rhetoric. Sibal once again highlighted the Electoral Commission’s critical role in the matter. Such contentious episodes weaken the process that we know as the principles of a free and fair election.
The problem suggests that society is polarized to an extent and that politicians should think twice before they make statements. Sibal urged the Election Commission to do due diligence to the principles of fair play and equilibrium by rapidly dealing with any fall to instigate communal or religious controversies with the only aim of political gain.
