A senior Shiv Sena (UBT) leader has alleged that the overconfidence and attitude of Congress, its Maharashtra partner, played spoilsport in dashing the chances of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance in the just concluded Maharashtra assembly polls. The BJP and their alliance Mahayuti wrested the majority by clinching 230 out of 288 seats; MVA, including Congress, NCP faction led by Sharad Pawar, and Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena could argue only 46 seats.
The MLA leader of the opposition, Ambadas Danve was not happy with Congress’s strategies in the seat-sharing exercise, saying it was overconfidence that went wrong. He said that the Congress party, especially after performing well in the Lok Sabha elections, started putting pressure for more seats which was the point of disagreement in the alliance. Danve added that the Congress, which secured 13 numbers of Lok Sabha seats bargained for more seats but finally settled for 16 in the Assembly, where IN was contesting 103 seats. However, Shiv Sena (UBT) had contested in 89 seats, out of which it has won 20 and the NCP had contested in 87 seats and won only 10.
To this, Danve added that the face to be projected for the CM candidate of the MVA should have been Uddhav Thackeray, which he said would have benefitted the alliance. He indirectly had words for Congress when he said, “Even before the results, they were preparing with a suit and tie”. Khaidem said that if Thackeray had been introduced as the CM face, the results could have been different.
Speaking to the media, Danve said this while also stating that some of the candidates from the Shiv Sena (UBT) had raised issues about the organizational structure, which clearly indicated that the party would concentrate on building up for future elections. He said that the Shiv Sena (UBT) is aspiring to fight the elections for all the 288 assembly constituencies in Maharashtra.
