Shashi Tharoor, the leader of the Congress, has praised the Indian government for naming its attack on Pakistan after the Pahalgam attack as ‘Operation Sindoor’. In a speech at the National Press Club in Washington, DC, Tharoor said that wearing sindoor was regarded as an emotional symbol for many Indian women.

Tharoor went on to explain that red vermilion powder is rubbed at the hairline by married Hindu women to serve as a sign of their marriage. He mentioned that some non-Hindus wear bangles for decoration, but to true Hindus, a bangle is an important symbol, especially of the husband’s well-being and the married stage of a female.

Considering the fact that sindoor is the same colour as blood, Tharoor spoke of the savage terror attack that took place in Pahalgam on April 22, making people aware of the loss of 26 lives. In the words of Tharoor, attackers aimed to frighten husbands in front of their wives and kids so that the family would suffer from the trauma. He described what happened when a woman was desperate to die after seeing her husband die, but instead, they did not kill her and told her to bring the news back to her family.

He pointed out that the choice of “Operation Sindoor” as the name of the operation was no coincidence. “Adornment of sindoor on women’s heads was erased—among them were women who belonged to Hindu and Christian faiths. Its main goal was to right the wrong done by that heartless event.

Upon hearing Pakistan say they are the victims of terrorism, Shashi Tharoor said, using Hillary Clinton’s words: “When you raise terrorists on your own soil, they will attack others as well.”
