Shashi Tharoor, leader of Congress and a Member of Parliament, pointed out how much China is involved in Pakistan’s military and indicated that the term “defense” may be irrelevant for Islamabad’s military. During a parliamentary trip to the US, Tharoor pointed out that China provides 81 per cent of Pakistan’s defence machinery, which makes it very hard for India to ignore its problems with the country.
When speaking before think tank leaders in Washington D.C., Tharoor said, “We should use another term instead of defense.” There are several sides to the issue of offence. China cannot be dismissed when it comes to the way we have dealt with Pakistan. He pointed out that CPEC, the largest project within the BRI, demonstrates both the strategy and financial support China brings to Pakistan.
The comments are being made after the Indian military carried out Operation Sindoor in response to higher tensions with Pakistan. He pointed out that after the clashes in 2020, there were signs of normalisation between India and China, but Beijing’s backing of Pakistan over the conflict revealed something else. Taking note of China’s involvement in watering down the United Nations statement on the April 22 attack, Tharoor said we should remain watchful of China’s activities.
Still, he maintained that India would stick to diplomacy, economic progress and trade, no matter who the neighbours were. We are still achieving high levels of trade with China. He asked nations globally to accept the delicate situation in the area and avoid acting on unrealistic hopes.
