At least 153 people, supposedly undocumented Bangladeshis, were flown by plane from Jodhpur in Rajasthan to West Bengal on Wednesday for deportation, according to state police officials. The transfer was carried out on the day the High Court of Rajasthan informed the state government about its concerns related to the unlawful detention of Muslims in the ongoing crackdown on Bangladeshis.

Most of those deported Bangladeshis were already in the custody of the intelligence wing of the Rajasthan Police, after they were taken from places such as Jaipur, Ajmer and Sikar. They spent time at makeshift detention centres before they were taken to their destination camps. The BSF in West Bengal will liaise with their Bangladeshi colleagues on the repatriation of individuals, according to a senior police official. The first set of 148 people, whose citizenship had been verified, was sent to West Bengal and Tripura on May 14.

So far, the Rajasthan Police have caught and detained at least 1,008 Bangladeshi citizens living without documents. A total of 394 suspects were picked up in Sikar, 218 in Jaipur and another 101 in Alwar, Kotputli and Bhiwadi. The drive is being managed from the Jaipur-based unit of the police intelligence. District superintendents and the Jaipur police commissioner were told to assemble teams to check and validate the presence of suspected Bangladeshis.

After the crackdown began on April 29, it stirred up many disagreements. When five habeas corpus petitions claimed Muslims and other Indians were being held against their will, the High Court came in to investigate. Advocate Saadat Ali pointed out that about 40–50 Indian Muslims from Bagrana in Jaipur were taken into custody based solely on suspicion, and shortly after, they were allowed to go after providing proof, but then detained again for verification of their nationality. Mohammed Shoeb claimed his mother was arrested and transferred to a Pratapnagar detention centre without a proper reason.
