The search and rescue operation led by the multi-agency in the Anjaw district of the Arunachal Pradesh officially came to an end on Monday due to the tragic mini-truck incident that killed 20 people. The operation, initiated on December 11, was called off following four days of round the clock work by the different disaster response teams, the Anjaw Deputy Commissioner Millo Kojin said.
Officials have claimed that 20 bodies have been found in the deep gorge with one survivor having survived. This was an accident that happened to a mini-truck that was transporting labourers in the Tinsukia district of Assam, which fell into a ravine on December 8, along the Hayuliang-Chaglagam road. The car was in a crash, about 40km out of Hayuliang subdivision which is close to Lailiang village.
First, it was assumed that there were 22 labourers in the car. A message, however, sent by the senior superintendent of police of the Tinsukia district later confirmed that there were only 21 on board, as well as the driver. The district administration recorded this clarification.
The accident was revealed only on the evening of December 10, when a critically wounded survivor came to a nearby labour camp of the Border Roads Task Force and reported the accident. Subsequently a massive search and rescue operation commenced and included the National Disaster Response Force, Indian Army, the Border Roads Task Force, local police and district administration officials.
The teams also fought relentlessly to get the bodies out of the gorge despite very harsh terrain and bad climatic situations. In another order, the administration affirmed that the NDRF team had fulfilled its mandate and was discharged of service on the spot after giving all mortal remains to the authorities that could then deliver the same to the families after due legal procedures.
The deputy commissioner who is also the chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority appreciated the professionalism, dedication and coordinated efforts of all the agencies.
