Sanjay Raut, Shiv Sena (UBT) Lok Sabha MP, on Monday called the arrest of the son-in-law of former Maharashtra minister Eknath Khadse by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in a drugs case a suspicion and accused the ruling BJP of keeping a close eye on the families of its political opponents. Talking to the reporters in New Delhi, Raut claimed Khadse was being framed since he had very recently implicated BJP leader, state cabinet minister, Girish Mahajan, in a honey trap case.

Jayant Khewalkar, a married man to Rohini Khadse, the state women chief of the NCP (Sharad Pawar extremity), was arrested together with six other people after Pune police officers broke into an apartment early on Sunday. Authorities said they found drugs, hookah contraptions, and alcohol, adding that it was a drug party.

The whole thing is dubious, said Sanjay Raut, adding that Khadse had openly talked about the honey trap scandalous incident and Mahajan’s involvement therein days before the arrest. There is no enquiry into the said allegations, and so we find all of a sudden Khadse’s son-in-law is put behind bars; he indicated there was some political vendetta in it.

Raut even further claimed that the police became the subjects of the government in power and worked against those who criticised this government. He also bemoaned the undermining of a traditional political rule: Previously, a political conflict never involved family members. “Unluckily, now, BJP leaders are slandering the families of the opponents.”

The competition between Khadse, who switched to the NCP along with its then-undivided factions in 2020, and Mahajan is common knowledge in Jalgaon district. The recent scandal has intensified the battle, and Mahajan has alleged that Khadse was making false claims to defame him. Raut said he (Mahajan) was jubilant when Khewalkar was arrested, after the news was leaked out, he was practically dancing. The case is supposed to lead to an increase in political tension in the state.
