On Wednesday, Droupadi Murmu emphasized the tremendous achievement that has been achieved through the Jal Jeevan Mission, saying that almost 82 per cent of all rural households in India today have tap water connections. She mentioned that the figure was only 17 per cent in 2019 when the mission was launched the first time, which indicates a high increase in rural water supply during the last several years.
In his address at the Jal Mahotsav programme, the President mentioned that the enhancement is a culmination of the long-term effort of the government to make drinking water reliable and safe to the villages of the nation. She praised C. R. Patil, the Union Minister of Jal Shakti and his team of Ministers in terms of their contribution towards this milestone and empowering rural infrastructure.
Murmu underlined the fact that water plays a special role in the culture and social life of India. She thinks that water is not only a fundamental need but also an indispensable factor that is closely connected to the traditions and livelihoods of the country as well as the values of communities. She also said that water is a sacred element in Indian culture and it is commonly related to health and wellness.
Using the example of the patriotic song Vande Mataram, the 150th anniversary of which is being celebrated, the President pointed out that the first word in the song is Sujalam that means plenty of good water resources. She implied that this shows the strong historical and emotional attachment of water that Indians have.
Murmu also emphasized his need to preserve water sources and manage them sustainably thus making sure that the future generation will still enjoy clean and sufficient water supplies in the country.
