British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has expressed his hopes for a reduction in the dispute between India and Canada during a conversation with his Canadian counterpart, Justin Trudeau. The main focus of their discussion revolved around the situation related to the killing of a Khalistani terrorist in June, which has strained relations between the two countries.
In a statement from Downing Street, it was mentioned that Rishi Sunak received updates on the situation concerning diplomats in India during their Friday evening call. Both leaders agreed to maintain lines of communication regarding this matter. Sunak reiterated the UK’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and respecting sovereignty aligning with the principles outlined in the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. He expressed his desire to see a de-escalation in the situation. Affirmed his willingness to remain engaged with Prime Minister Trudeau to determine steps.
This call comes after Prime Minister Trudeau’s statement in the Parliament month, where he stated that Canadian security forces were actively investigating credible allegations connecting Indian government agents to the murder of Khalistan Tiger Force leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia back in June.
India strongly dismissed these allegations as “absurd and motivated.”After the dispute, the United Kingdom faced a situation where the tensions continued to reverberate. This was evident when Vikram Doraiswami, the Indian High Commissioner to the UK, encountered obstacles from Khalistan extremists when attempting to visit Glasgow Gurdwara in Scotland.
