The mother of RG Kar Medical College student who was raped and murdered last year in Kolkata has accused the West Bengal police force under the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of beating her up during a demonstration on Saturday. She claimed that women cops beat her around as she was about to reach a march to the West Bengal state secretariat, Nabanna, organized to commemorate the first anniversary of brutal rape and killing of her daughter in February, in a state-funded hospital. She says that the fight led to her conventional shankha (conch shell bangle) being smashed and an injury to the head.
“What is this preventing us? All I am asking is that we meet Nabanna and my daughter gets justice,” she added.
The family members of the victim, who organized the march, demanded Mamata Banerjee to resign, saying that the latter had failed to provide security to women in the state. The rally was however barred by the excessive police force right at the point where it was heading to Nabanna. The father of the victim also claimed that the police attempted to prevent the family to arriving at Dorina Crossing to take part in the march, although the family obtained the court permission to conduct the peaceful protest.
The Opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari suggested that BJP workers attend the rally without the party banners so that the attention would concentrate on the indignity of the victim. Without the BJP banners, flags and other accessories, he and some BJP MLAs accompanied the parents of the victim on the Dorina Crossing of Kolkata, the Esplanade area.
Adhikari stated that the Mamata Banerjee government is getting scared of this huge population which has come out in protest for the RG Kar rape victim.
Purporting the Tricolour and armed with posters and banners, the protesters sought justice to the victim and the stepping down of the Chief Minister. The protest has once again sparked the anger of the people on the safety of women and the supposed lack of police action in West Bengal.
