A film based on the alleged rape and murder of a young doctor in RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata in August 2024 has now gained formal acceptance by the parents of the victim, a major advancement almost two months after the victim had filed a protest over the project publicly.
Sources have it that the parents signed a consent letter in mid-December giving a complete and unconditional consent to the filming of the film called Tillotoma. They mention in the document that they do not object to the production and gave the filmmakers the green light to carry out the execution, presentation, and release of the movie. Though the letter is dated August 15, 2025, the filmmaker made it clear that it is a date on which a draft of the consent was initially released to the family, yet the latter was actually approved later.
The RG Kar case had caused a furor throughout West Bengal and further with claims of utter lapses in the initial investigation by the Kolkata Police. Under increasing pressure the investigation was passed on to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) where it continues to date. The victim father has also claimed on numerous occasions that the state government and police have tried to compromise witnesses and bungle important in the probe.
According to director Ujjwal Chatterjee, the project was pushed back by almost two months because of the confusion on the part of the family. We would have only moved forward after being given a proper permission by the parents. We can go on our way now that all is in readiness, he told me. Chatterjee also included that experienced actors Jaya Prada, Mithun Chakraborty have been cast in major parts and Payal Chatterjee would play the victim.
The filmmaker also ascertained that the film proposes to use the actual names of the people involved in the case and is focused on bringing out the situation of the incident and the investigation that followed thereafter.
