The Tihar jail sources also said that jailed Jammu and Kashmir MP Rashid Engineer, who was granted two-day custody parole by the Delhi High Court a day ago to attend the Budget session of the Parliament, was taken to RML Hospital under tight police security on Tuesday morning for a routine medical checkup.

In a terror funding case which was within the time 2019, Rashid Engineer, who had been put in Tihar Jail, had approached the Supreme Court to secure interim bail or custody probation so that he could complete his parliamentary duties and defend his constituency in the Lok Sabha. After the court gave approval to his going to the hospital to be examined for health and then to the Parliament, he was taken to the hospital.

Rashid will be directly taken to Parliament from hospital, officials said. Nevertheless, there are strict conditions on his temporary release. He is banned from using a mobile phone, using the internet and speaking in any public forum or making any public statements. He is allowed to do nothing other than his role as an elected MP.

Baramulla MP is being probed for allegedly funding, among many other things, separatist and terror groups active in Jammu and Kashmir. In 2019, he was arrested as part of a broad sweep of terror financing networks, which also ensnared a number of other high-profile people.

However, Rashid Engineer, despite his imprisonment, remains a very influential political figure in the region. The legal and political complexities of his case might also explain why his parole was granted for the Budget session. As always, authorities continue monitoring him, and he is still allowed to do his parliamentary duties, but he has to comply with the court’s directives.
