New Delhi: Hearing the case on Security Lapse during PM Modi’s visit to Punjab on Wednesday, the SC ordered that his travel records be preserved. The massive security breach that left PM stranded for 20 minutes on a flyover in Ferozpur, gained huge political criticism towards the ruling party in Punjab.
The SC has ordered Punjab and Haryana HC Registrar General to “ keep all records in his safe custody.” It further instructed the Punjab Police and Special Protection Group and other private and govt agencies to co-operate and provide necessary assistance. It cited the lapse case as ‘the rarest of the rare’.
Representing Centre, Solicitor Gen Tushar Mehta claimed the incident to have caused international embarrassment. “Both the Punjab government and the police were responsible for the security lapse… There’s also possibility of cross border terrorism. This is something which ought to have been avoided, it’s a case of potential international embarrassment,” Mr Mehta said.
In response to the claims by Centre, Senior Adv DS Paltwalia, AG of Punjab backing the lapse said that the govt has constituted a committee to probe the incident. The SC approved the inclusion of DGP Chandigarh in the committee constituted. In addition to this, the SC also instructed the probe committee not to take any action until Monday.
The hearing was held on the account of a plea submitted by NGO Lawyers Voice that sought action against those responsible for the security breach and appropriate guidance to avoid the recurrence of such incidences.
