Rajnath Singh said it is high time that India transformed into a drone manufacturing centre by 2030, noting the increased relevance of unmanned systems in the contemporary warfare. Giving a speech at a conclave about advanced manufacturing technologies, he has pointed out how the recent conflicts (including the war in Russia-Ukraine and the situation in West Asia) have shown that drones and counter-drone systems are now the key to the battle strategies.
Singh emphasized that it is essential to attain national security and strategic independence in the drone industry in India. He emphasized that indigenous production should not only focus on the assembly of finished products, but also entail the production of the major components, which include engines, software, batteries, and control systems. In the present state, the import of drone-related components is an urgent necessity of many countries, and primarily China, which India strives to lessen.
The defence minister requested a mission-mode strategy to establish a healthy domestic ecosystem of the manufacture of drones. This impulse is in line with the overall roadmap of the military transformation in India, namely, the Defence Forces Vision 2047, the main objective of which is to turn the armed forces into the technologically developed and globally competitive ones.
As one of the components of this vision, India is strategizing to come up with specialised forces including drone force, cyber command, space command and defence geospatial agency. Such efforts are aimed at equipping the military to meet the changing demands in warfare due to the fast changing technology.
The comments of Singh are also in the light of the growing interest in unmanned systems that have been on the limelight during the recent national events and are a representation of their increased contribution in the surveillance, reconnaissance missions and precise strikes.
