The Indian delegation, which will be led by the country’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, will visit the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Defence Ministers Meeting that will be held in Qingdao, China, from June 25 to 26, 2025. Stating that the development was confirmed by the official statement of the Ministry of Defence, the importance of the event regarding the solution to some burning security problems of the region and the whole world in general is pointed out.
In the course of the meeting, the defence ministers of the member states of the SCO are anticipated to have a broad-based discussion that encompasses issues related to international and regional peace and security, counter-terrorism approaches and mechanisms of increasing cooperation of the defence ministries of the participating countries. The platform allows the member states the necessary platform to enhance trust and increase defence cooperation and coordination in the fight against common threats.
Minister Rajnath Singh is expected to reiterate India’s commitment to the main value and motive of the SCO. He will also probably bring the Indian vision of a stable and peaceful world order, promote the concerted effort to eliminate terrorism and extremism and the necessity of increased economic collaboration, connectivity, and trade among the SCO members.
As a side event, Singh will have bilateral negotiations with his counterparts in various member countries, such as China and Russia. These are the meetings that are likely to stretch matters of the consolidation of defence relationships and the bilateral and regional security issues.
India believes that the SCO is a vital multilateral mechanism for fostering political, economic, security, and cultural cooperation. Grounded on the principles of sovereignty, non-interference in internal affairs, and respect towards each other, the SCO promotes harmony and inclusivity in the region.
Established in 2001, the SCO presently has ten member states including India, China, Russia, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Iran and Belarus. India took part as a full-fledged member in the SCO since 2017, and it is now 2025, and China is the rotating president under the theme of upholding the spirit of Shanghai.
