The Navy’s latest multi-role, stealth-guided missile frigate, “INS Tushil,” will be presented by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday at Russia’s Kaliningrad.

At the Yantra Shipyard in Kaliningrad, Rajnath Singh, Indian Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, and other senior Russian and Indian defense and civilian officials will commission the warship, an improved Krivak III Class frigate, as part of Project 1135.6.

The Defense Minister is on an official visit to Russia from December 8–10, according to a statement from the Defense Ministry. On December 10, he and his Russian counterpart Andrey Belousov will co-chair the 21st meeting of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Military and Military Technical Cooperation (IRIGC-M&MTC) in Moscow.

The two leaders will examine the full spectrum of the two nations’ diverse defense-related ties, including industrial and military-to-military cooperation. They will also exchange views on contemporary regional and global issues of mutual interest. The Indian minister will also honor the Soviet soldiers who lost their lives in World War II by paying respects at “The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier” in Moscow. Additionally, he will engage with the Indian community members.

There are currently six Krivak-class warships in service, including three Talwar-class vessels built at the Baltiysky shipyard in St. Petersburg and three Teg-class vessels built at the Yantar shipyard in Kaliningrad. The seventh in the series and the first of two Advanced Additional Follow-on ships will be ‘INS Tushil.’ A contract for this ship was signed by the Government of India and the Navy with JSC Rosoboronexport in October 2016.

According to officials, the 125-meter-long, 3,900-ton vessel is a deadly combination of Indian and Russian advanced technologies, as well as the greatest warship building practices. The ship underwent a number of rigorous tests starting in January 2024, following construction and readiness. These included factory sea trials, state committee trials, and delivery acceptance trials conducted by a specialized Indian team. ‘Nirbhay, Abhedya aur Balsheel’ (Fearless, Indomitable, Resolute) is the Indian Navy’s motto, and the ship represents the Navy’s unwavering dedication to protecting the country’s maritime borders.

Among the leading Indian original equipment manufacturers were Johnson Controls India, Elcome Marine, Bharat Electronics Ltd, Keltron, Nova Integrated Systems from Tata, and BrahMos Aerospace Pvt Ltd.
