Defence minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday criticized Marxist historians and earlier administrations for what he called an intentional neglect of the contribution of Dalit and tribal people in India’s freedom struggle. Singh made those declarations during the unveiling of a statue of freedom fighter Uda Devi Pasi in Lucknow. Over the years, he indicated, history books depicted only a small number of families contributing to freedom, while Dalit, Adivasi and Pasi leaders were neglected. He remarked that many leaders from these communities sacrificed a lot, but their contributions were never recognized.

Singh commended the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, for paying attention to those heroes, or more specifically, for paying attention to them, as the chief minister said the prior state government took action to recognize Pasi leaders and other marginalized communities.

While speaking at the event, Adityanath indicated that Uttar Pradesh was a hub for the revolt of 1857 and that Pasi leaders, Uda Devi included, had made considerable contributions to the uprising. He mentioned that the state government has put in place a designated book in primary schools to memorialize the contributions of the Pasi community to students and the contributions of other ill-treated freedom fighters – thus finally preserving their legacy and finally putting them in history.
