On Tuesday, the defence minister Rajnath Singh encouraged international defence contractors to exploit the enormous opportunities that the burgeoning Indian ship building industry offers. At a seminar held in the Department of Defence Production to demonstrate the capabilities of Indian shipyards called Samudra Utkarsh, Singh opined that India stands well to become a shipbuilding, ship repair and maritime innovation hub of the world.
Providing emphasis on the increasing maritime capabilities of the country, Rajnath Singh pointed out that the Indian shipyards have already proved that they are technologically mature, as there is now an aircraft carrier, research vessels, and energy-saving commercial ships. The distinguishing feature of India, he said, was its end-to-end and completely integrated ecosystem of shipbuilding. Since concept design and modular construction, to outfitting, refit, repairs, and complete life-cycle support, all steps of the shipbuilding process are developed and implemented inside the country, as highlighted by Singh.
He indicated that the ability of India to make ship is increased by a strong network of State owned and privately owned shipyards which are backed by thousands of MSMEs. This value chain includes important elements including steel and propulsion systems, electronics, sensors, and advanced combat technologies. In his speech to delegates, industry stakeholder, foreign partners, and armed forces officers, Singh restated the point that the shipbuilding industry in India, which is driven by both the inspiration of the spirit in the citizens and vigor in the entrepreneurs, is the crucial player in the protection of national and regional interests at sea.
The defence minister emphasised that India was willing to contribute to the creation of what he termed the maritime century through ship building, as well as partnerships across the globe based on trust. He has given as examples of his country the increasing design capability, automation and industrial depth such flagship projects as the first indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, the Kalvari-class submarines and stealth frigates and destroyers.
Singh then concluded that India is on the stable course of becoming a significant global shipbuilding and maritime innovation hub in the next decade with its total set of capabilities and world-class platforms.
