Rajiv Gauba, who is a former Cabinet Secretary, has been appointed as a full-time member of NITI Aayog, as per an official notification issued on Tuesday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved Gauba’s appointment, and he will take over with immediate effect for such period until further orders. He will be a salaried employee on the same terms and conditions that are applied elsewhere to other full-time members of the policy think tank.

Gauba, who is from the 1982 batch of IAS cadre from Jharkhand, brings with him an illustrious public administration career. From 2019 to August 2024, he was Cabinet Secretary for five years, during which he made major contributions to governance and policy implementation at the highest level of the Indian administration.

Rajiv Gauba was in many key positions in the central and state governments before he was placed in the Cabinet Secretary slot. As the Union Home Secretary, he carved a special niche in administrative and national security affairs. He has also been the Secretary of the Ministry of Urban Development, during which time he played a part in many of the urban infrastructure projects and policies. Prior to taking up his charge as Jharkhand’s governor, Gauba was the Chief Secretary of the state, being responsible for governing and development initiatives.

Gauba’s induction into NITI Aayog is a move to bolster the think tank’s policy-making framework with his vast experience in administration, urban planning and governance. As a full-time member, he will be engaged in formulating strategies and giving advice to the government on some of the critical economic and developmental issues.

His appointment comes when NITI Aayog is engaging in pressing national concerns like economic growth, infrastructure development, digital transformation and sustainability. Experts view his expertise as a big plus to the organisation’s initiatives.
