It is a significant milestone that Indian Railways has broken the milestone this financial year and the total loading has already crossed 1 billion tonnes before the year ends. The Ministry of Railways reported on Saturday that Railways has cumulative freight loading of 1,020 million tonnes as of November 19 which is indicative of a strong increase in demand and better operation performance.

As indicated in the press note of the ministry, this has been made possible by the wide ranging support of the major sectors. Coal is the most domineering freight item with 505 million tonnes, and iron ore, cement, containers, pig iron and finished steel, fertilisers, mineral oil, foodgrains and raw material of steel plants have been contributing significantly. The ministry pointed out that loading has increased to an average of 4.4 million tonnes every day compared with 4.2 million tonnes in the previous year, which indicates greater efficiency and the continued operation of industries.

A comparison analysis also shows the growth path of the Railways. During the period between April and October 2025, freight loading reached 935.1 million tonnes, which is higher than 906.9 million tonnes, the same year in the previous year. Such growth over the years is an indication of the increased contribution of the Railways to the growth of the Indian industrial and infrastructure sectors.

The ministry also emphasized on cement transportation when developing infrastructure in the country. Some of the reforms that have been put forward by the Railways in a bid to enhance efficiency in the logistics within this important segment are The Policy of Bulk Cement Terminals and rationalised container rates to move bulk cement. These are meant to modernise the cement supply chain, increase the bulk handling capacity, shorten the transit time, and minimise the cost of logistics. These strategic interventions are expected to benefit both the industries stakeholders and the consumers.

The Railways observed that there are numerous benefits to transporting a higher percentage of bulk goods by rail than just commercial benefits. It improves safety, minimises carbon emission, minimises road congestion and leads to a more sustainable long term growth.
