Rahul Gandhi, as Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, travelled to Poonch on Saturday to meet those whose lives were disrupted by shelling from Pakistan. The whole area was rained upon with bombs during a four-day military fight between India and Pakistan, damaging it and leaving many hearts broken.
While on his visit, he spoke with those whose homes and loved ones were taken away by the shelling. He provided support and peace of mind to people who told him about the things they had experienced, including loss and how they had survived. “Today, I delivered condolences to the families who lost someone in the Pakistan shelling in Poonch. Surrounded by wrecked houses, piles of ruined items and spoken tales of losing family members, patriotic families go through the most and do so with determination and pride. Let us honour their courage,” Rahul Gandhi posted on the social media platform X.
He promised the victims that he would talk about their needs and requests with Parliament. “I fully back the families affected by the terror attacks – I will voice their concerns and requests at the national level,” he went on to say.
Gandhi toured the homes that had been attacked by shells, and among them was the house where 12-year-old twins Zoya and Zain passed away. Being there for families brought some comfort to people who had experienced the effects of the shelling.
Apart from looking at the destruction at homes, Gandhi visited Gurudwara Shri Guru Singh Sabha in Poonch, where shelling had also taken place. At the school near their home, he met with students to inspire them to hold on. Fear seizes us now, but life will settle back down soon. “Make sure to spend time studying, having fun playing sports and building relationships with others,” Gandhi said.
His visit was widely praised as a kind gesture at a tough time for that part of the border.
