Imphal: Mr Rahul Gandhi, a respected leader of the Indian National Congress, had planned to visit the relief camps in Manipur. These camps are home to thousands of individuals who have been forced to flee their homes due to the violent clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities. Unrest in Manipur has persisted for an extended period now leading to grave consequences such as loss of lives and numerous injuries. He will be visiting the camps on Thursday and Friday. Although he is currently in Bishnupur, the Police isn’t allowing him to go ahead because of Security reasons.
The reported statistics reveal over 100 deaths and more than 400 injuries so far. Prime Minister Narendra Modis response involved organizing a meeting with senior government officials to assess the situation in Manipur; however this approach has drawn criticism for his absence from personally visiting or publicly acknowledging the ongoing crisis within the state. Home Minister Amit Shah did visit Manipur earlier to establish a plan for restoring normalcy, but incidents of violence have persisted daily.
During Rahul Gandhi’s visit, he will meet with leaders from civil society groups and assess the condition of those residing in relief camps. Congress leaders have also demanded the imposition of federal rule in Manipur. Around one-third of the 5,960 cases of arson and violence registered in Manipur in the past 56 days were filed by the police themselves, regardless of jurisdiction, according to data.
This includes approximately 1,771 “zero FIRs” initiated by the police on their own. The high number of cases filed by the police raises questions about their involvement, impartiality, and accountability. The situation in Manipur remains tense, with daily incidents of arson and violence. The data highlights the need for a comprehensive response to restore peace and justice in the region. Further scrutiny of the registered cases and their outcomes is necessary to understand the ongoing unrest and evaluate the effectiveness of the police response.
