On Tuesday, the leader of the Congress party Rahul Gandhi accused the Centre of trying to censor the release of a Tamil language film Jana Nayagan claiming that it was an attack on Tamil culture and that Prime Minister Narendra Modi could never silence the Tamil people. Gandhi made this comment during his visit to the Tamil Nadu which is just poll bound and the scandal surrounding the film has been turning into a mainstream political matter at a very high pace.
Going over to social media site, X, the Leader of Opposition at the Lok Sabha claimed that the activities of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry was cultural repression. The efforts by the I&B Ministry to suppress Jana Nayagan is an assault on the Tamil culture. Gandhi wrote that Mr Modi would never be able to silence the voice of the Tamil folk.
Jana Nayagan has been hit by controversy following the appeal of the manufacturers of Jana Nayagan to the Supreme Court challenging an interim order of the Madras High Court passed on January 9. The High Court had put on hold a single-judge ruling which required the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to certify the movie and as such its future remained unclear. This makes the politically charged film stand in an undecided position that attracts extensive attention throughout the state.
KVN Productions LLP has filed the appeal of the order that a division bench of the Madras High Court had ordered. The movie has been keenly followed because of its powerful political overtures and the time it was released, just before the Tamil Nadu elections.
To make the matter even more important, Jana Nayagan has been extensively marketed as the last movie that Vijay would undertake before commencing full-time politics. The actor has just started his political outfit, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK.), which has further enhanced the interest of people and politicians on the movie.
The film, initially scheduled to be released on the Pongal festival on January 9, fell into last-minute problems after the CBFC could not give the film the necessary certification.
