A Congress leader, Rahul Gandhi, on Saturday visited Madhya Pradesh, and spoke to families of the recent water contamination disaster in Indore, which caused a massive outbreak of vomiting and diarrhoea in the Bhagirathpura region. The event that occurred earlier in this month was said to have killed several people, and left some of the locals hospitalised.

Official sources state that the state government has only verified their six deaths, and local sources and opposition leaders have suggested that the number may even be more with at least twelve deaths reported by locals. The pollution had dire consequences on Bhagirathpura where people were thought to have fallen ill due to contaminated drinking water.

Rahul Gandhi came to meet the affected families and the BJP-led state government, who tried to hold the BJP government accountable and to provide the affected with compensation and medical care in the proper way. Coming out to the media, he declared that the perpetrators of the lapse should also be found and dealt with. This tragedy is carried out by someone, an official or a person in the system. Gandhi cautioned that the government should take responsibility.

He also emphasized that families whose family members died as a result of accidents should be given reasonable monetary compensations, those in treatment should be given complete assistance in medical costs. Gandhi accused the administrative negligence of being the cause of the incident and it would have been avoided otherwise by good management and maintenance of the infrastructure.

Gandhi later in the day visited Bombay Hospital where some of the victims are undergoing treatment and engaged the doctors and the families that are there to know their status. He subsequently made a trip to Bhagirathpura, where he got to meet the people and relatives of the deceased to listen to their grievances themselves.

The visit has added more political pressure on the state government as the Congress has enforced an unbiased investigation on the contamination and further action to stop such cases in the future. The government has not come out with a comprehensive answer to the demands of Gandhi.
