The leader of the Indian opposition in the lower house of the parliament Rahul Gandhi, demanded Adani’s arrest after the billionaire was indicted by US authorities. Gandhi also called for an inquiry into Madhabi Puri Buch, who he said was shielding Adani. Taking to the media on Thursday at a press conference, Gandhi questioned how the Adani Group continues to walk free in India despite the charges leveled by the US.

‘It is now evident and beyond doubt in the US and in India that Mr. Adani has violated both the American and Indian bar,’ Gandhi said. “He has been indicted in the US and is free to move around this country.” Gandhi’s comments come after substantial progress in the case against Adani, where US prosecutors alleged that he was a part of a plan to bribe more than $250 million to Indian government officials in order to obtain solar energy tenders.

Rahul Gandhi reiterated in the briefing held on Monday that the recent charges against Adani supported what he has been saying for a long time. “We have been raising this issue repeatedly, including the concerns which were expressed over Madhabi Puri Buch, and this totally vindicates everything we were saying,” Gandhi said. He continued to condemn Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for protecting Adani, stating that the two were involved in dishonest practices. “The prime minister is shielding Mr. Adani, and he is involved in malfeasance with him. The developments,” he said, “have clearly indicated this.”

The allegations of embezzlement against Adani have generated huge political debate, mainly among the opposition. The content and timing of this statement by Gandhi further hedged demands of mistrust and ineptness witnessed in the ongoing investigation and brought back an active discussion about the relation of Adani to the ruling government in the country.
