On Thursday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi made serious charges on the issue of the conduct of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, alleging the Election Commission of India (ECI) had colluded with the BJP to steal elections. Bangalore Central parliamentary seat came in as a classic example, which Gandhi cited as vote theft (vote chori) during a press briefing in Delhi.

The Congress party had lost the Bangalore Central seat by a mere vote of less than 3 percentage points, according to Gandhi, but irregularities were widespread. He has claimed that there were false voters and repeat voting, which, according to him, proved decisive in the event, as he looks to claim that it swung the result in favor of the BJP.

According to Gandhi, “It is not an isolated case. The Bangalore Central case is a proper example of how democracy is being destroyed with the help of the manipulation of elections.” He also insinuated that the ECI had failed in its mandate to carry out a free and fair election, thereby being in cahoots with the ruling party.

By 2.30 pm on August 7, neither the Bharatiya Janata Party nor the Election Commission had made an official statement in response to Gandhi’s statements. Nevertheless, it has also attracted major political attention and is likely to evoke blunt responses among the BJP and the polling bodies.

This scandal occurs as there is a rising concern about the transparency of polls and the obligation of the institutions. Now that it is clear that the Congress might take the case further, i.e. legal case or a complaint to the ECI, the case may become a major point of confrontation in national politics.

According to political pundits, such claims are a potentially significant deterioration of public confidence in the electoral system of India, which casts doubt on the Indian democracy in the present age.
