New Delhi: A week after Gujarat High Court declined to day Rahul Gandhi’s conviction in a criminal defamation case, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi filed an appeal in the Supreme Court on Saturday challenging the HC’s decision.

In March, a Surat magisterial court had convicted and sentenced Rahul to two years in prison, finding him guilty of criminal defamation following a complaint filed by the BJP’s Surat West MLA, Purnesh Modi, who objected to Rahul’s remarks in Kolar in April 2019. Following his conviction, Rahul Gandhi was disqualified from Lok Sabha where he represented the Wayanad constituency in Kerela.

On July7, the Gujarat High Court turned down Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s request seeking a hold on his conviction in a defamation case today. “There is no reasonable ground to stay the conviction, which is just, proper and legal”, said Gujarat High Court over 2019 Modi surname mark while dismissing his request.

More than a month after it held a final hearing, the Gujarat High Court pronounced its judgment today on former Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s plea to stay the conviction in the criminal defamation case in which he was sentenced to two years in jail by a court in Surat.

Justice Helmand Prachchhak of the High Court completed the hearing on May 2nd and reserved the order in the petition that sought to stay the conviction.
