Trying to solve the prevailing issue of waterlogging in the area around Bharat Mandapam, the Public Works Department (PWD) has drafted a new plan to build a new kerb channel drain along Mathura Road, they said on Friday. The relocation is meant to enhance drainage in one of the most susceptible areas of the capital especially during the monsoon season.
Waterlogging has been a constant problem on Mathra Road since the construction of the Pragati Maidan underground transit, and there is a tendency of serious flooding during the downpour. The next project that is going to be undertaken as stated by a senior PWD official will also incorporate the Ring Road stretch between Network Bhairon Marg T-point up to the Indraprastha flyover. This area will be tailored to prevent rain water into the carriageway flowing into smaller drains so as to minimize the amount of water on the roadbed.
Even with the massive redevelopment efforts that were undertaken in the run-up to the G-20 summit three years ago, it is still seen that low-lying areas around ITO and the Ring Road near Indraprastha still waterlog even when there is a slight rainfall. The officials are of the view that the new drainage measures will give a solution to the long standing problems that the previous interventions had not addressed fully.
The proposed kerb channel drain will go along Mathura Road between W-point skywalk and Delhi Public School (DPS), Mathura Road. The project will commence before long after awarding of the project and will be completed in a month, the official added.
In the previous year, a stretch of land between the gates numbered 6 and 10 at Bharat Mandapam was named as one of the key areas of waterlogging. In retaliation, the PWD developed a new stormwater drain and installed CCTV cameras at various points in order to observe closely the formation of water and traffic flow during rain fall.
Besides the superficial drainage upgrades, the PWD has also floated a tender of seepage damages in the basement parking that is linked to the Pragati Maidan underground tunnel and the basement parking.
