The High Court at Bombay on Friday granted temporary bail of three days to Aditya Avinash Sood, an accused in the high-profile Pune Porsche crash case, on the grounds that his father suffered a heart attack and collapsed on Friday. Justice Ashwin Bhobe granted an interim bail till August 5 so that Sood would be able to attend the last rites of his father and any other ritual that followed it.
The incident that stirred up the nation happened on May 19 last year when an intoxicated youngster, in a speeding Porsche car, hit a couple of IT professionals on a bike in the Pune neighborhood of Kalyaninagar, killing them on the spot. The case not only led to anger regarding careless driving but also brought to light efforts at meddling with the key pieces of evidence during the investigation process.
A total of ten people, including Aditya Sood, have been arrested over their alleged involvement in the exchange of blood samples to protect the juvenile driver against alcohol test records. Police said the Sood blood samples were surreptitiously substituted with the blood samples belonging to his father in order to give investigators a false impression. Some doctors and employees of Pune were also involved in the scandal as they were directly implicated in the process of tampering with the evidence.
Lawyer Abid Mulani, the advocate of Sood, moved a praecipe in the court seeking interim bail days after his father had a heart attack in July and died on August 1. The prosecution, led by Special Public Prosecutor Shishir Hiray, did not object to the plea.
On the application, the court accepted the bail bond of Sood personally nondescript in the sum of 25,000. The temporary bail is confined to the participation in funeral processes, and Sood should go back to custody as soon as possible, as the case, mainly that of evidence falsification, is still under investigation.
