Pune: Four employees of a private company travelling on a minibus were charred to death, and five others got burn injuries in a tragic incident near Pune on Wednesday when the minibus they were travelling in caught fire. The fire broke out on a vehicle carrying office goers on its way near Dassault Systemes.

Police reports state the fire started near the driver’s seat, near his feet. Flames rapidly engulfed the front part of the bus, and the driver instantly felt the danger and brought the vehicle to a halt; they noticed that the front was on fire. It enabled people seated up front to get out of harm’s way.

Four Hinjewadi police station employees had escaped quickly from the minibus, sensing the danger, said Senior Police Inspector Kanhaiya Thorat. However, those sitting at the back of the vehicle were unable to get out. They tried to exit via the emergency exit at the back of the bus, but it didn’t work, and they had to be rescued, trapped on the bus.”

The employees trapped in the vehicle had nowhere to escape as the flames devoured it. Four people were charred to death in the fire, which ate up the minibus almost immediately. The fire loss of life, however, had already taken place, and emergency services and police officials quickly reached the scene to douse the fire.

Five of the passengers were rushed to a local hospital for treatment of burns. However, the fire’s cause is under investigation, with preliminary reports that the fire started in the area near the driver’s seat due to an electrical fault.

This terrible case has strong implications for the safety of private transport vehicles, in particular for emergency exits. Authorities are now expected to carry out a thorough investigation and ensure that, ultimately, no such accidents happen in the future.
