On Sunday, thousands of Shia Muslims demonstrated in Kashmir, Lucknow, Bhopal and Hyderabad after reports of killing of the Supreme leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei during the US-Israel combined attacks. People protested in masses lamenting and venting anger over the construction due to the fact that the cleric was a holy religious leader to the Shia communities across the globe.

In Srinagar, there were protests in the most important places such as Lal Chowk and similar meetings in the Budgam district and Bandipora. The protesters had red, black and yellow flags, portraits of Khamenei and Iranian flags. Others climbed up the iconic clock tower at Lal Chowk where they were chanting slogans and singing praises in his memory. Most of them were observed crying openly terming his death as a great loss to the world Shia community.

“This is a day of mourning. We are orphans, said one of the demonstrators, which expressed the emotional coloring of the streets. Khamenei was through the death of others termed as a national and sectarian martyrdom.

The government sent masses of security around Srinagar and blocked traffic in various locations to thwart any further sign of provocation. Police officers claimed that the protests were relatively calm and no unwanted situations were reported.

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha organized a security meeting and pleaded with the citizens to be calm. Omar Abdullah Chief Minister also urged restraint, he said he was concerned about the events going on in Iran and urged the people to preserve peace and to avoid any activities that would lead to tension and unrest.
