India Project-75: India is significantly expanding its naval power, following advancements in its land and air capabilities. The country has greenlit Project-75 India, a major initiative to bolster its underwater fleet. This project, valued at ₹70,000 crore, is a collaboration with Germany and focuses on developing six advanced submarines domestically.
India will now develop six advanced submarines in the country with the cooperation of Germany. The private sector is also involved in this program, in which Larsen & Toubro is expected to play a major role in collaboration with the Navy’s Submarine Production Center. India is also working on two nuclear submarines. This contract is expected to be completed within the next six months.

Defence officials said the aim of the project is not only to expand India’s submarine fleet but also to strengthen India’s indigenous capability to build conventional submarines. According to a report, after a delay of more than six months, the central government has given the nod to the Defence Ministry and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) to begin formal negotiations with Germany’s ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) for the construction of six advanced submarines under Project 75 India (P-75I).
Defence officials told media that the negotiations are expected to begin by the end of this month. They said that the central government has now given the nod to the Defence Ministry and MDL to begin negotiations for the project and the process is expected to begin by the end of this month.
Along with the P-75I, India is also working on two nuclear submarines. The programme also involves the private sector, with Larsen & Toubro (L&T) expected to play a key role in collaboration with the Navy’s Submarine Production Centre. The government is exploring options to fast-track both nuclear and conventional submarine projects, realising their importance in the sector. The talks with TKMS are expected to lay the groundwork for next-gen conventional submarine production in India. Defence sources told ANI that the government is keen to not only acquire these boats but also develop indigenous design and manufacturing expertise for future needs. The contract is expected to be signed within the next six months.
