In the Jammu and Kashmir’s Budgam district, authorities have registered a case against those who had organized and participated in Friday’s pro-Palestine rally. According to Bertha, the procession in Sonpah village allegedly interrupted law and order for raising objectionable slogans.

Youm-e-Quds, or Quds Day or International Quds Day, is an annual event which is observed on the last Friday of Ramzan, and the rally was a part of it. Pro-Palestine demonstrations across the world take place on the day to show solidarity for the Palestinian cause.

A police spokesperson said that many people gathered under the organizers’ instructions and chanted slogans against which they objected. It also caused inconvenience to commuters on the blocked Sonpah – Beerwah road, which also raised concerns about public order as the demonstrators also blocked the Giamana – Suiga road. Things took a swift turn and were registered under sections 126(2) and 189(6) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita in Beerwah police station.

The police said investigations are ongoing, and those involved will be taken to legal steps. They have also asked the citizens to maintain peace and refrain from acts that would disrupt public order.

It has come soon after a string of pro-Palestine protests in Kashmir. Hundreds demonstrated in the streets in September 2024, where they condemned the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. Lebanese protesters showed images of the country’s leader and chanted slogans including “Oh martyrs of Palestine, we’re with you!” Some had banners that condemned both Israel and the United States. Political leaders suspended campaigning for the upcoming assembly elections after the demos.

As Northern India continues to be sensitive to pro-Palestine feelings, the past so dramatic hadn’t reached as high as it did in Budgam.
