In her address at the inaugural convocation of AIIMS Deoghar on Thursday, President Droupadi Murmu emphasized the need to have empathy and compassion in the medical profession. In her address in the temple city, she scolded the medical community that they needed to be clinical with their diagnosis and surgery, but not with their behaviour, as people in times of need are likely to think of doctors as doers of gods. She emphasized that moral values, charity, and sensitivity are just as important as medical skills are in healing lives and in bringing light to the suffering.

Speaking of the issues being experienced by the tribal communities in the villages, the President requested AIIMS Deoghar to increase its outreach programs by taking more villages under its widening umbrella. She pointed out that women of tribal regions are still suffering from anaemia, and children are malnourished and therefore need to take an active part in the social service and community health programs by the doctors.

Murmu said that it was an excellent way of bridging healthcare differences and hailed the innovative approaches of AIIMS Deoghar in providing anti-venomous medicines through the use of drones in tribal areas as far as 60 km. She also spoke of her personal connection to the institute, declaring that she was the Governor of Jharkhand when the Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of the institution, way back in 2018.

Governor Santosh Gangwar, MP Nishikant Dubey, and Minister Dipika Pandey Singh attended the event where the institute graduated its first batch of MBBS students who were admitted to the institute in 2019. President Murmu has been on a two-day visit to Jharkhand, and the occasion was testimony to the importance given to the development of the health sector in the state.

AIIMS Deoghar, which is being built at an estimated cost of 1103 crores, has its inpatient department and operation theatre commissioned by Prime Minister Modi in July 2022, and it further deepens the role of the institute in serving as a major medical hub in the region.
