After spending four years with Trinamool Congress (TMC), former President Pranab Mukherjee’s son Abhijit Mukherjee was back in the Congress with him on Wednesday. Congress received former Lok Sabha MP back into the party at the party headquarters in Kolkata. All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary and West Bengal in-charge Gulam Ahmed Mir and an MLA from Jammu and Kashmir were present on the dais.

National and state leaders presented the Congress flag to him, speaking to the media, whom he later called his ‘second birthday’ in Congress and politics. He admitted that he first announced his wish to return to Congress in June last year, except that many state elections had postponed the process.

Pranab Mukherjee’s son was previously with the party, where his father was an MP for several decades and occupied important ministerial slots before becoming India’s president. Known to be a significant boost for the Congress’s West Bengal unit, he has been trying to cement its presence in the state, and his return will be good news for the party.

West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee president Subhankar Sarkar also said Mukherjee’s decision was a ‘big step’ for the state unit, which is struggling hard for the people of Bengal.

In 2012, Abhijit Mukherjee entered Parliament for the first time when he won the Jangipur Lok Sabha by-election on a Congress ticket after his father quit the seat on electing as President of India. As a candidate for Congress, he retained the constituency in the 2014 general elections. His re-induction into the party is expected to strengthen Congress’s chances in the state in the lead-up to impending political bouts.
